Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship Programs:

Registered apprenticeships are formalized career training programs that
offer a combination of structured on-the-job training and related
technical instruction.  Employees are trained in occupations that demand
a high level of skill.  Standards are industry-driven; an industry or
program sponsor determines the skill requirements needed to build and
sustain a quality workforce.

Apprenticeships can last from one to six years depending on the
industry.  During this time, apprentices work and learn under the
direction of experienced journey workers.  Over time, apprentices are
provided the diversity and complexity of training that leads to becoming
highly skilled in their chosen occupations.  As employees gain skills,
they are compensated through an increase in wages.

Currently, the SWATC offers apprenticeship programs for two industries,
plumbing and electrical.  Nationwide, there are over 850 occupations
that are recognized as apprenticeable through the U.S. Department of
Labor, and more are being added all the time.  The SWATC will respond to
regional needs through apprenticeship programs, as industry demands and
employers are willing to sponsor students in apprenticeable fields.
