American Sign Language This course is designed to introduce the beginning concepts of ASL*. ASL is arguably as intricate and complex as any other foreign language, but because it is a "visual" language, it is fairly easy to learn and improve.
In the first semester, students will acquire a basic understanding of the language and a growing vocabulary base. By the end of the first year, students are expected to have a functional ability to communicate with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. They should also possess basic interpreting skills, and understand interpreter ethics, applicable interpreter law, and cultural nuances that are fundamental to effective interpreting. The second year will focus on building vocabulary and interpreting skills. Students will be prepared to earn an intermediate to advanced interpreter certificate from an authorized agency
Low level interpreters can make between $8 and $15 per hour. Advanced interpreters can make as much as $45 per hour interpreting in the courts and other advanced settings.
*ASL is recognized as a foreign language and fulfills foreign language requirements toward high school graduation.
